教育部直属高校将扩编 14所中西部高校将晋级

Elite universities are to be established by the Ministryof Education in 14 central and western provinces thathave never had a university directly under the ministrybefore, as part of the central government's pledge tobridge the widening education gap.

教育部将在14个没有该部委直属高校的中西部省份建设一流大学，作为我国政府缩小日渐扩大的教育差距举措的一部分。 There are only 79 universities that are directlyadministered by the ministry. In Beijing alone, there are24, including Peking University, Tsinghua University andRenmin University.

据悉，目前只有79所大学由教育部直接管理。不过仅在北京，就有包括北京大学、清华大学和人民大学在内的24所高校。

Chu Zhaohui, a senior researcher at the National Institute of Education Sciences, said thatestablishing more universities in central and western areas under the ministry's administrationmeans increased access to educational resources and opportunities.

中央教育科学研究所研究员储朝晖指出，增加中西部教育部直属高校意味着这些学校将获得更多的教育资源和机会。

The government also promised to take more measures, which include improving school facilities andeducation quality to better education in central and western areas.

政府还承诺要采取更多措施，包括改善学校设施、提高教学质量等以改善中西部地区的教育水平。

The authorities are pressing ahead with a plan to ensure more students from poverty-strickenareas and those from ethnic groups have equal opportunities to enroll at prestigious universities.

In a document issued on last Wednesday, the government promised to take more measures toimprove education in less-developed central and western areas. It aims to improve school facilities,education quality and to cultivate more talent to support local economic development, narrowingthe gap with developed eastern areas by 2020.
