An offensive by insurgents that threatens to dismember Iraq has seemed to slow, as the security forces continued fierce clashes with Sunni insurgents on Saturday. The troops have managed to retake control of three towns in Salahudin province. 

The army also reasserted control over the small town of Ishaqi, southeast of Samarra, to secure a road that links the city to Baghdad and the cities of Tikrit and Mosul further north.

Major general Qassim Atta says most of the province has been returned to the control of the Iraqi military and security forces also took back territory on the edges of Nineveh province.

Militants are still in control of Tikrit. They have planted landmines and roadside bombs at the city’s entrances. Iraqi helicopter gunships are continuing airstrikes around the city.
